Ever since he revealed that “probably the biggest pop star in the world” sings backing vocals on the upcoming Foo Fighters album, Concrete and Gold, Dave Grohl has been flooded with questions about the identity of the mystery star. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Grohl still wouldn’t reveal the answer, but he does offer a couple of hints.
First of all, Grohl wouldn’t use the term “pop star” again to describe the mystery guest. “This person is, I think, is more than that,” he says.
Grohl also talked about how the collaboration came together.
“It was sort of towards the end of the album and this person came up and said, ‘Man, I’d really love to sing on your record,'” Grohl remembers. “I looked at [Concrete and Gold producer] Greg [Kurstin] and said, ‘OK, come in tomorrow and we’ll figure something out.’ So we found a backup part for this person to sing and we decided we were gonna make it our own dirty little secret and see if anyone can figure it out.”
Grohl adds that the star has “been around a long time,” but he’d “be amazed if anyone can really figure it out.”
“I think I’ve met this person maybe a few times, but I’d never spent time with this person, and we had a blast together,” he says. “And [he or she is] very talented — more so than I ever knew.”
Grohl previously said that neither Adele nor Taylor Swift sing on Concrete and Gold. Among the guests that have been revealed are Alison Mosshart of The Kills and The Dead Weather, and Shawn Stockman of R&B group Boyz II Men.
Concrete and Gold will be released September 15.
